Shahid Imran: Reinventing Senior Living

Across the world, people are living longer, thanks to advancements in technology, medical innovation, and improved quality of life. In 2019, one in eleven people were over the age of 65, a number expected to rise to one in six by 2050. With aging comes natural biological changes and additional health concerns that require continuous or periodic care. However, the evolving structure of modern society has led many seniors to opt for assisted living in specialized communities rather than facing their later years alone and unattended.

As seniors transition into retirement, the senior living industry is undergoing significant changes, with higher expectations for quality of life. Recent years have brought transformative shifts, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, making it more critical than ever to serve tomorrow’s senior population with better care, services, and amenities. Shahid Imran, Managing Director and CEO of Build Senior Living, has been at the forefront of these changes, redefining how senior living communities operate. Recognizing the evolving demands of aging populations, he has integrated wellness-focused solutions and a hospitality-driven approach to assisted living. “We are seeing a shift from institutional environments to spaces that embrace leisure and comfort because today’s seniors have different expectations than those of the past,” says Shahid.

Shahid’s journey into the senior living industry was shaped by personal experience and an innate desire to provide care. As the eldest of five children, he felt a deep sense of responsibility toward his siblings and parents. While he understood his purpose, he needed to determine how best to fulfill it. After earning a degree in natural science, he spent time in Texas searching for his niche before returning to Michigan, where he became a part-owner of a medical supply company. Eventually, he sold his share and became his own boss. It was during a routine visit to an assisted living facility that he had an epiphany. “The facility was nice, but I kept thinking about my parents. I wanted to see better services and amenities for seniors because these individuals shaped the people we are today,” he recalls.

Driven by his vision, Shahid established Build Senior Living to create communities that enrich residents’ lives with dignity, integrity, and compassion. He saw a gap in the market—no facility truly prioritized high-quality care and premium amenities in the way he envisioned for his own parents. This distinction became the foundation of Build Senior Living, setting it apart from competitors. The company not only serves its residents but also provides a strong support system for their families. Understanding the concerns families face when considering assisted living, the team ensures they offer guidance, whether through paperwork assistance or emotional reassurance.

Beyond superior care, Build Senior Living carefully selects locations that offer scenic beauty, whether it be wooded landscapes, mountain views, or lakeside settings. “We take pride in creating a lifestyle that blends comfort with excellent care, whether in Assisted Living or Memory Care. We also hire professionals who embody the nurturing qualities essential for this environment,” says Shahid.

The journey was not without its challenges. Entering an unfamiliar industry, Shahid had to navigate licensing processes, city regulations, construction timelines, and the complexities of running a senior living business. However, his biggest challenge was overcoming negativity. “When things didn’t go as planned, it created mental roadblocks. I had to differentiate between obstacles beyond my control and mistakes I could fix with time and effort,” he explains.

What allowed him to turn setbacks into opportunities was passion. “My passion fuels me every morning, making me excited to create the best possible homes for our residents. Passion inspires others to believe in what we do and motivates me to keep improving,” says Shahid. Innovation is equally crucial in keeping that passion alive. He constantly explores ways to enhance senior living communities, ensuring they remain the best in the industry. When executed correctly, these innovations foster meaningful connections between residents and caregivers.

Shahid credits motivation and risk-taking as key drivers of his success. Growing up with humble beginnings, he understood that he alone was responsible for shaping his future. He pushed himself to build something meaningful, something that would continue to have an impact even in his absence. A natural risk-taker, he never feared stepping outside conventional boundaries. “I never thought of failure as an option. If I made a mistake, I would learn from it and move forward,” he says.

Remaining relevant in the senior living industry requires more than just marketing—it demands valuable services that cater to modern seniors, who are more informed, selective, and engaged than ever before. Shahid and his team carefully study demographic data to ensure inclusivity and provide tailored amenities. They analyze existing senior communities to understand resident preferences and continually refine their offerings based on direct feedback. “Listening to our residents is the most effective way to improve and adapt,” he says.

Build Senior Living also prioritizes being an exceptional employer, recognizing that a dedicated team is the foundation of its success. The company constantly reinvents itself, staying ahead of industry trends to provide the highest level of care. “It always seems impossible until it’s done. My goal is to build the largest privately-owned assisted living company in the country,” Shahid concludes.
